Illinois residents who filed claims against Google should receive $100 as a payout from the $100 million lawsuit.

In June 2022, Google settled a $100 million class-action lawsuit alleging that its face grouping tool that sorts Google photos by similarity violated Illinois’s Biometric Privacy Law.

State law requires companies to obtain consent from users before collecting and saving their biometric information.

Those who were eligible to receive payments included people who appeared in a photo on Google Photos between May 1, 2015, and April 25, 2022. More than 687,000 Illinois residents should receive a payment.

Recipients must have been an Illinois resident at the time, and the deadline to claim a cut of the settlement was Sept. 24, 2022.

Residents can expect a $95 payment. When filing the claim, Illinoisians selected how they would like to receive their payout, either by check or electronically through Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, digital MasterCard, or direct deposit.

On June 2, the court ordered that funds be distributed to Illinois residents that submitted valid claims. All funds should be distributed before July 7. Residents can find more information about their claims online.
