A government watchdog group says Illinois is failing young people and families by not adequately investing in higher education.

The Center for Tax and Budget Accountability says after adjusting for inflation, state support for higher ed has fallen by nearly 50% since the year 2000 – while tuition has more than doubled during that time.

The group says that has made college increasingly out of reach for low- and middle-income households and especially for students of color.

The Chicago-based organization is calling on lawmakers to increase funding support for colleges and universities and to put more money into the Monetary Assistance Program, or MAP, which provides tuition support for low-income students.
