If Americans go back to the moon someday, they could be staying in a habitat designed and constructed in Illinois.

The “Rosenberg Moon Habitat,” built by Ingersoll Machine Tools in Rockford, has been chosen as “The Coolest Thing Made in Illinois” in the online “Makers Madness” competition put on by the Illinois Manufacturers Association.

The habitat is made of 3-D printed polymers and is designed to actually be printed and built on the moon, where it could then house a crew of two people within the 23-foot tall structure.

The innovative design beat out more than 250 other Illinois-made products to take the title, which was handed out Wednesday at a ceremony in Springfield.
