El Niño pattern adds uncertainty to Idaho fall forecast
BOISE — Southwest Idaho is about a week into fall, but except for a day here and there, sweaters have stayed in dresser drawers and pumpkin spice lattes largely have been of the iced variety. “We’ve been about 10 to 15 degrees warmer than normal in the Treasure Valley,” David Groenert, meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Boise, told the Idaho Press on Thursday morning. “Even though the temperatures are above average, I wouldn’t say that means they’re out of the ordinary. We typically see a high-pressure ridge settle in as we transition from summer into fall, and it can get pretty warm this time of year.” The average first freeze date in Boise — or the first time each year that the temperature reaches or falls below 32 degrees — is Oct. 17, according to NWS data . “Our first freeze data has trended later over the decades,” Groenert said. “We haven’t had a first freeze in September since 1999.” First frost, or when it’s 36 degrees or lower, is around Oct. 4, which is coming up Sunday. It doesn’t appear the low will come close to that mark. The forecast for Boise is calling for lows
