As wind and rain batter lower elevations, multiple trees, power lines, and utility poles have fallen this evening across central Humboldt County occasionally blocking major roads.

Over 1700 people are without electricity–mostly in the middle western area of the county from Redcrest to McKinleyville.

And at 9:05 p.m. a 2.5 quake tapped the Willits area. There are no reports of damage as is normal for smaller events like this.

Meanwhile, snow is falling in Trinity County. Chains are required on Hwy 3 from 9 miles north of Hayfork to 8 miles south of Douglas City, according to Caltrans QuickMap. The map also shows chains required on Hwy 36 near Mad River and near Platina.

But the winds have caused the main damage this evening. According to a Facebook post from the National Weather Service in Eureka just before four p.m., “High winds have already started to build across the area with a 58 mph gust recorded in McKinleyville…Winds will persist this evening with the strongest gusts along the coast expected between 8 and 11 PM tonight.”

The National Weather Service predicts the wind will last until tomorrow morning. They warn that snow could fall in mountainous areas of Humboldt, Del Norte, Mendocino counties and could be significant, especially in Trinity County.

UPDATE 10:46 p.m.: According to a tweet by Caltrans District 2, “State Route 3 in Trinity County is CLOSED @ Scott Mountain due to winter weather conditions.”

It’ll be nice to have some good swimming this summer, we stop swimming the beginning of June last year because the river was so nasty.
