19-year-old dead, another arrested after argument leads to shooting at basketball court near Humble

The victim’s adoptive mother says the teen had his ups and downs before his death.

HUMBLE, Texas – A teen boy is dead and another teen is in custody after a shooting at a basketball court near Humble on Wednesday evening.

Deputies with Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting at Park Lakes Canyon Trace and Butterfly Path.

According to investigators, a group of people met up to play basketball at an area court. At some point, two of the teens got into an argument.

That was when deputies said one of the teens pulled out a gun and shot 19-year-old Christian Cotton multiple times. He died at the scene.

“We are shocked, but absolutely devastated. You don’t expect for a young man to die over a fight,”Keyumma Archie said.

Keyumma Archie says a part of her is missing since she lost her adoptive son Christian Cotton. She and his grandmother have raised him since his mother died a few years ago.

“Christian was 19-years-old. He just had a birthday May 14th. He was a regular 19-year-old. He was very protective and he was very loyal,” she said.

Archie says her son was gunned down at a basketball court inside this gated community at Park Lakes Canyon Trace and Butterfly Path. She says Christian got into a fight with a guy before another teen stepped in with a gun.

Investigators believe the two teens knew each other, and that a case of bullying may be involved but Archie says that was not the case.

“It wasn’t even his fight. He was into it with one of his friends but these kids nowadays they are amped about getting the name out here. The name in the streets,” she said.

Archie says Christian had his ups and downs but he was trying to get on the right track. She says the violence is getting out of control and hopes the suspect will tell the truth.

“No body deserves to be shot even if they are fighting. Just fight and get it over that’s it, you don’t have to bring a gun,” she said.

The alleged shooter is in custody and has cooperated with detectives. At this time, it’s unclear what charges he may face.

No additional injuries were reported.

Archie says Christian was getting ready for a job interview next week.
