Update: Boil water notice for city of Hughson in Stanislaus County has been canceled

Update: Hughson Police Services posted the following on Saturday afternoon:

CANCELLATION OF BOIL WATER NOTICE

On 04/26/2024 you were notified of the need to boil/disinfect all tap water used for drinking and cooking purposes.

The City of Hughson Water System in conjunction with the State Water Resources Control Board has determined that, through abatement of the health hazard and comprehensive testing of the water, your water is safe to drink. It is no longer necessary to boil your tap water or for you to consume bottled water.

Original story: A boil water notice was issued for the entire city of Hughson due to depressurization in its water system on Friday.

Residents were urged not to drink or cook with tap water unless it’s boiled to avoid stomach or intestinal illness. Bottled water can be used as an alternative.

“We will inform you when tests show that water is safe to drink, and you no longer need to boil your water,” read the notice. “We anticipate resolving the problem within two to three days.”

The notice advised the following:

Do not drink the water without boiling first

• Boil water for one minute (rolling boil)
• Let water cool before drinking
• Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice
• Boiling water kills bacteria and other organisms in the water

If you are unable to boil water

• For clear water, use eight drops (1/8 teaspoon) of bleach for one gallon of water. For cloudy water, filter through a clean cloth and use 16 drops (1/4 teaspoon) of bleach for one gallon of water.
• Mix well. Allow to stand for 30 minutes before using.
• Water may taste or smell like chlorine. This means disinfection has occurred.
• For water disinfection tablets, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
