A 48-year-old man was arrested after a fatal double shooting at the burial service of a 10-year-old girl killed by a stray bullet in D.C. on Mother's Day, according to police.
Police said the shooting happened on Tuesday around 1 p.m. at Washington National Cemetery in the 4100 block of Suitland Road.
Wilson Chavis, 48, of Hughesville Md. was charged in connection to the deadly shooting of a pallbearer, identified as 30-year-old Ronald Steven Banks, police said.
When officers were called to the Washington National Cemetery, they found Banks suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died at a hospital. A woman was also found with a graze wound and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
An investigation revealed that Chavis owns the funeral service that was providing the service for Arianna's burial. Police said he confronted two people at the service who were a part of another funeral service company that he had an ongoing business dispute with.
Police said the confrontation then started to make funeral attendees upset with Chavis and they confronted him about his behavior. Chavis then pulled out a gun and fired two shots, hitting Banks and a woman.
Chavis fled the cemetery in his car before officers with the Morningside Police Department stopped him and took him into custody.
Chavis is being charged with first and second-degree murder, attempted first and second-degree murder, and related charges.
Police are asking anyone who has information relevant to this investigation, to call detectives at 301-516-2512.
