Colonel Ralph Rizzo Jr. assumes command at Camp Lejeune, vows to continue recovery efforts
CAMP LEJEUNE, Onslow County — An exciting morning onboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune- a new face taking charge of the installation. After less than a year as Commanding General for Camp Lejeune, Brigadier General Aldofo Garcia Jr. relinquished command of the base to Colonel Ralph Rizzo Jr. in a ceremony at WPT Hill Field Friday morning, May 24, 2024.
Emerald Isle seeks second round of bids for major project to replace beach access walkways
EMERALD ISLE — Emerald Isle is out for bids again for a project to demolish and replace 13 beach access walkways. The town sought and received five bids earlier this year for the big project, which will use up to $825,000 in Federal Emergency Management funds.

First annual May “Spring in Bloom” Fest
First annual MAY “Spring in Bloom” Fest of Maysville, NC was held on May 18, 2024 on the grounds of the Maysville Methodist Church across from Frost Park. The forecast was showing severe thunderstorms with heavy rain for most of the day that may have deterred many participants; however, there were several willing to take the chance and show up in support fellow vendors and their Host: White Oak Jones-Onslow Community Basin Initiatives, Non-Profit 501c3. The weather turned out warm, sunny, a few light sprinkles and everyone was elated in their decision to move forward. We may have been smaller than projected; however, we had a great time, and we look forward to the opportunity to increase participation to fulfill planned events and contests each year.

Pedestrian seriously injured
A pedestrian was seriously injured when he was hit by a tractor-trailer on West Corbett Avenue in Swansboro on Tuesday, May 21. Chief Dwayne Taylor of the Swansboro Police Department said town police and fire personnel were dispatched to the intersection of West Corbett Avenue and Hammocks Beach Road at 3:40 p.m.
Foundation pays off mortgage for family of fallen Marine in honor of Memorial Day
Onslow County, NC — The Tunnel to Towers Foundation announced they paid a Jacksonville families home mortgage in full to honor a fallen Marine. US Marine Corps Master Sergeant Andrew "Andy" Sullivan was diagnosed with service-connected multiple sclerosis due to exposure to toxins from military burn pits. Officials say during the COVID-19 pandemic he began having difficulty breathing.

EDITORIAL: Morehead City should prioritize virtual access to public meetings
Just three years ago Morehead City dedicated its new 21,000 square foot two-story Town Hall, designed with improved work environment for city staff and easy access for the public as well as up to date audio-visual equipment in the council chambers to benefit the audience attending public meetings. Considering these improvements ostensibly designed to enhance public access, it is hard to understand why the town council is resistant to going one step further by live streaming its council meetings on the internet as is being done in county commissioner meetings and in three of the county’s municipalities.
