Former Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz Agrees to One-Year Deal With Texans, per Report

A day after trading their top receiver to the Cowboys, the Texans are reportedly making a move to add a veteran pass catcher with ties to their cross-state rival.

Houston reached an agreement with tight end Dalton Schultz on a one-year deal worth up to $9 million, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday. The news comes on the heels of a reported deal between the Texans and Cowboys that sent receiver Brandin Cooks to Dallas in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick and a ’24 sixth-round pick.

Drafted in the fourth round in 2018, Schultz, 26, has spent his first five seasons with the Cowboys, where he has played a pivotal role as a reliable safety valve for quarterback Dak Prescott over the last three seasons. In 2022, Schultz hauled in 57 receptions (84 targets) for 577 yards and five touchdowns in 15 starts during a 12–5 campaign that ended in a divisional round loss to the 49ers.

For the Texans—and their presumed incoming rookie QB—Schultz will provide stability in the lineup for a rebuilding team that started six different players at the position last season. For his career, the five-year pro has logged 211 receptions, 2,122 yards and 17 TDs in 75 games played (56 starts). Schultz is also just two years removed from a career-best 2021 season where he recorded a 78-reception, 808-yard and seven-TD stat line.
