June is going to be a busy month for Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation.
Summer Adventure Day Camp begins now, and will run through the end of July. Organized for children aged 6-to-12, most of the spots are full for the eight-week schedule. Though, some will open up occasionally, following cancellations. Currently, the four-day holiday week of July 3-7 still has several spots still available. Registration forms can be picked up at the office.
At 6 PM Friday, June 9, the 5th Annual “Squealin’ on the Square” BBQ Festival will force downtown Hopkinsville to pig out on pork, and it’s this year’s first event in the “Sounds@6” series. It’s sponsored by Huhtamaki, and will feature as many as 10 BBQ teams battling for cash prizes and trophies and multiple categories. Spots do remain for teams to enter. Live music will be provided by “Xtraordinary Gentlemen,” their first local performance for the year. BBQ from the competition then goes on sale to the public.
“Movies in the Park” moves forward with its third flick, “Top Gun: Maverick,” which will show at 8 PM June 16 in the Tie Breaker Athletic Complex. Holiday Burger will be on site for snacks and a “dinner under the stars,” and guests are encouraged to arrive early, bring lawn chairs and blankets. Sponsors include United Southern Bank and WHOP Lite 98.7.
“Hoptown Hosedown” is also back for this year. For 11 days in June and July, the Hopkinsville Fire Department will provide a pumper truck that will travel to different parks on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week, safely spraying down attendees with a water hose and nozzle. It will begin at 1:30 PM those days, and a rotating schedule is available online at the HPR website.
The newly-renamed “Bluegrass Splash” is now open, and will remain open all summer. Hours and rates can be found at bluegrasssplash.com. “Funday Mondays” are back with buy-one, get-one-free admission, and “Birthday Party” and “After Hours Event” reservations can be taken by calling (270) 890-0730, or stopping by the park during operating hours.
The Planters Bank-Jennie Stuart Health Sportsplex will be rather crammed, as well. The Inaugural “Baird Hopkinsville Pickleball at the Plex” tournament is set for Saturday, June 10. But on Friday, June 9, the courts will be open for casual pickleball play during open gym hours for tournament players and the public to get a feel for the courts.
The Plex will also host a basketball tournament on June 3-4 for Hoopz Showcase, and on June 22-25 for Crossovers. Christian County High School is hosting its Summer Shootout June 5-8, bringing boys and girls junior varsity and varsity squads from several regions into the area.
