A Hoover man is under arrest after police say he beat his wife and tried to suffocate her with a trash bag.

Mardoqueo Poroj-Argueta, 37, is charged with attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping and interference with a domestic violence emergency call.

Hoover police responded about 10:37 a.m. Thursday to a domestic dispute at Lorna Place Apartments on Treeline Court, said police Lt. Daniel Lowe.  A witness heard a woman calling for help and saw a man attempting to pull her into an apartment.

Officers arrived on the scene and were able to find the couple.

Lowe said the 28-year-old victim was taken to a medical facility, where she was treated and released. Investigators determined the suspect used his hands and several weapons to injure here before trying to suffocate her with the trash bag.

Poroj-Argueta is currently being held in the Hoover City Jail and will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail later today.  He will be held without bond.

Anyone with any additional information about the case is asked to call Det. Jennifer Harrelson at 205-444-7539.
