Planning to go hiking this week? Here’s where you shouldn’t go (for now)
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - If you’re planning on going on a hike this week, a few of Oahu’s popular hiking trails are off limits for now as maintenance work is underway.
Koko Crater stairs will be closed on four separate days for replacement work. The city is working with non-profit Kokonut Koaltion on the $426,000 project to revamp the popular trail.
The city will be continuing its work to demolish and replace the World War II-era metal platform at the summit, which had welcomed hikers after a long trek up.
A new steel structure designed for recreation is being put in its place.
The stairway and summit are scheduled to be closed while the helicopter is in use on:
- Wednesday, June 7
- Friday, June 16
- Monday, June 26
- Thursday, June 29
Another hiking trail to avoid for the time being is the iconic Manoa Falls.
With hundreds of thousands of visitors to the trail annually, the heavy foot traffic and wet climate make for potentially dangerous conditions.
DLNR said Manoa Falls’ hiking trail will be closed starting Monday.
Work will include trail hardening and runoff management to manage soil erosion and slippery conditions.
It is anticipated to reopen July 1.
