Coast Guard Hawaii Pacific Commander: Guam commercial port now open after Typhoon Mawar damage

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Hawaii Pacific said the commercial port of Guam is now open to allow for much-needed food, supplies and fuel to be brought in after Typhoon Mawar ravaged the territory last week.

“There were some navigational buoys that had been misplaced because of the storm so we worked night and day to get those back on line, and I’m happy to say that the port is now open for business and we’ve got six ships in queue to come into port right now,” said Admiral Michael Day on HNN’s Sunrise Weekends.

The USCG is among many groups helping with relief efforts on Guam, whose residents have been without power for several days.

Admiral Day also talked about the impact on Guam’s Coast Guard community.

“It’s a lot of challenges out there, but I’m very proud of the women and men in the 14th district and particularly people out in Guam,” Admiral Day said. “We have 15 families who do not have homes, or their homes were damaged in the storm. So we’re working on relocating them first to hotels, and then we’ll look at it for a longer-term solution for them.”

While the island is still experiencing power outages, no fatalities have been reported.
