Habitat For Humanity and Wesier Brothers salvage items from renovations at Holmen schools

HOLMEN, Wis. (WKBT) -- Wieser Brothers and Habitat for Humanity are salvaging usable materials from two Holmen schools under renovation.

The renovations happening this summer at Viking Elementary and Holmen Middle School are part of the $74.5 million bond project passed by voters in November 2022.

While the project will include plenty of new materials and furnishings, they're not tossing all their leftovers to the curb.

"Typical construction or renovation project like this, all this material would just wind up in the trash," said Habitat for Humanity Community Outreach Coordinator Natalie Heneghan.

On Monday, workers spent the day removing items like cabinets and lockers that can be reclaimed and kept out of the landfill. Habitat for Humanity wants to repurpose them for other buildings and homes.

"They've really been focused on being more sustainable in their construction practices. It really aligns well with Habitat's work and our mission to save stuff from the landfill and recuse all the stuff," said Heneghan.

The collaboration is part of Wieser Brothers goal to be more sustainable with their construction practices.

"[If] we can get volunteers on site to help with the salvage, we can make a really big impact in just a few days by salvaging all this material at once. So, we're very much interested in all the school projects popping up at once nowadays," said Heneghan.

So far, 314 lockers have been restored and sold to the public. Heneghan recommends anyone interested in buying the items to stop by Habitat ReStore on Wednesday.
