Man who found child from stolen SUV honored by Holly Hill police
MANSLAUGHTER OF A CHILD. A FRIGHTENING MORNING FOR A COUPLE IN HOLLY HILL WHOSE VEHICLE WAS STOLEN WITH THEIR THREE YEAR OLD ASLEEP IN THE BACK SEAT. THE CHILD WAS FOUND BY A STRANGER UNHARMED ABOUT 30 MINUTES LATER AND REUNITED WITH HIS PARENTS. BELIEVE WE HAVE HIM. THE CAR IS JUST A CAR SHAKEN UP, TO SAY THE LEAST. BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. CARS AND BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE CAN. SO THE MAN WHO SAW SOMETHING AND DID SOMETHING TO HELP THE CHILD HAS BEEN A BIT DOWN ON HIS LUCK LATELY. DARRYL EVERSON WAS A SPECIAL GUEST AT A COMMUNITY WATCH MEETING TONIGHT. WELL, SHE WAS. GAIL PASCAL BROWN REPORTS THE POLICE CHIEF CALLS HIM A HERO AND SAYS THE COMMUNITY IS ALREADY REACHING OUT TO HELP GET EVERSON BACK ON HIS FEET. YOU ALL WHO HAVE BEEN HERE KNOW I’M AN EXAMPLE TYPE OF PERSON. AND DARRYL, COULD YOU COULD YOU COME UP HERE, SIR? HOLLY HILLS POLICE CHIEF, TOLD FOLKS AT THIS COMMUNITY WATCH MEETING THAT 57 YEAR OLD DARRYL EVERSMANN IS THE DEFINITION OF COMMUNITY WATCH. THURSDAY MORNING, A 2019 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN WITH A THREE YEAR OLD INSIDE WERE STOLEN FROM THE DRIVEWAY OF A HOME ON CLIFTON AVENUE. THE BOY’S PARENTS HAD STOPPED TO CHECK ON AN ELDERLY RELATIVE AND LEFT THE TODDLER INSIDE THE RUNNING VEHICLE BECAUSE HE WAS ASLEEP. SURVEILLANCE VIDEO SHOWS A SUSPECT JUMPED INTO THE SUV AND THEN ABOUT A HALF A MILE FROM THE SCENE, HE DROPPED THE TODDLER OFF, WRAPPED IN A BLANKET. I WAS DRIVING TO MY STORAGE UNIT THERE ON STATE AVENUE AND I LOOKED TO MY RIGHT. THERE WAS A CHILD ABOUT FIVE FOOT OFF THE ROAD AND I KNEW THAT DIDN’T LOOK RIGHT. DARRELL, EVER STAYED WITH THE BOY AND CALLED 911. I WAS CONCERNED. HE LOOKED LIKE HE NEEDED SOME HELP AND I WAS GLAD I WAS THERE TO HELP HIM. AND THIS GUY DESERVES A ROUND OF APPLAUSE BECAUSE HE IS A HERO. HE’S A HERO. I’M GLAD HE’S OKAY. AND THANK GOD HE PUT ME IN THE PREDICAMENT. IF I KNEW I WAS GLAD I MADE THE RIGHT DECISIONS TO HELP HIM. EVERYMAN HAS BEEN HOMELESS FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, LIVING OUT OF HIS VEHICLE. THE GOOD SAMARITAN WAS INVITED TO DINNER AT THE COMMUNITY WATCH MEETING. I’VE GOT A GIFT CERTIFICATE. THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT AN OIL CHANGE. THEY’RE GOING TO HELP ME FIND SOME EMPLOYMENT. MAYBE. The good Samaritan who saw something and did something to help a child has been a bit down on his luck lately. Darrel Everman was a special guest at a community watch meeting Thursday night.The police chief calls him a hero and says the community is already reaching out to help get Everman back on his feet. "You all who have been here know I'm an example type of person. And Darrel could you, could you come up here, sir?” said Holly Hill police Chief Jeff Miller.Holly Hill's police chief told folks at this community watch meeting that 57-year-old Everman is the definition of community watch.On Thursday morning, a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan with a 3-year-old inside was stolen from the driveway of a home on Clifton Avenue. The boy's parents had stopped to check on an older relative and left the toddler inside the running vehicle because he was asleep.Surveillance video shows a suspect jumped into the SUV and then about a half a mile from the scene, he dropped the toddler off, wrapped in a blanket."I was driving to my storage unit there on State Avenue and I looked to my right and there's a child about five feet off the road. I knew that didn't look right,” Everman said.Everman stayed with the boy and called 911."I was concerned. He looked like he needed some help, and I was glad I was there to help him,” Everman said.“This guy deserves a round of applause. To me, he's a hero,” the police chief said."I'm glad he's OK. I thank God he put me in the predicament to find him. I was glad I made the right decisions to help him,” Everman said.Everman has been homeless for a number of years living out of his vehicle. The good Samaritan was invited to dinner at the community watch meeting."I've gotten a gift certificate. They're talking about an oil change. They're going to help me find some employment, maybe,” Everman said.“We're still looking for the vehicle and the suspect. The picture has been out. The video has been out. We want people, we know somebody knows this young man,” Miller said. The stolen vehicle is a red Volkswagen Tiguan with Florida plate AJ79FA.
