Fire crews responded to reports of a structure collapse at 4890 S Highland a little after 4 p.m. on Thursday. The building was going to be turned into an indoor pickleball facility.
Officials say all seven construction workers that were inside the structure were able to escape without major injuries. All personnel has reportedly been accounted for.

The construction workers might have hit a load-bearing wall and caused the building to partially collapse, according to Kelly Bird with the Unified Fire Authority. UFA’s response team included both fire and medical crews, a hazmat team to check for potential gas leaks, and a K-9 and its handler to search for potential trapped individuals.
“The city structure engineers are here, and they are doing an assessment and currently deciding what the next actions need to be,” Bird said. “It sounds like they are probably going to bring in some heavy machinery to tear down the rest of the structure that is still standing before they’re going to be able to let the adjacent structures and businesses get back inside.”
