Protect Yourself and Your Family from Tick-Borne Diseases When Outdoors
As the weather warms up, the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is reminding residents to protect themselves and their families from diseases spread by tick bites. Ticks are more active in warmer months, especially between April and September. Ticks live in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, or on animals. Activities such as walking your dog, camping, gardening, or hunting could bring you in close contact with ticks. Ticks can transmit several diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis, which have been found in DuPage County. Ticks can be removed by using clean, fine-tipped tweezers and pulling upward with steady, even pressure. After removing the tick, clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.
