HOBART, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A state appeals court Tuesday upheld Jacob Cayer’s convictions for killing his ex-girlfriend and her mother in 2016.
Cayer was convicted August 2020 of killing his ex-girlfriend, Sabrina Teague, and her mother, Heesun “Sunny” Teague, at a Hobart home. After a jury ruled he was not guilty by reason of mental disease, he was committed to a secure mental health facility.
Cayer appealed, arguing he was wrongfully denied the chance to introduce evidence someone else was responsible for the murders, that his constitutional rights were denied as a result, and that there was insufficient evidence for the convictions.
In a 13-page ruling Tuesday, the appeals court denied all of the arguments.
“Cayer’s Denny motions failed to identify any evidence with a legitimate tendency to show that (a third party) committed the murders. We therefore conclude that the circuit court properly denied the Denny motions and did not violate Cayer’s constitutional right to present a defense by doing so,” the court ruled. “In sum, the evidence of Cayer’s guilt was overwhelming and more than sufficient to support the verdicts on all six counts.”
