Make the state title streak 17 years for St. Mary’s

It took three overtimes, but when the St. Mary’s girls hockey team outlasted Notre Dame of Hingham to win the MIAA Division 1 state championship at TD Garden Sunday, March 17, it marked the 17 ^th consecutive year that St. Mary’s has won at least one state championship.

The Spartans have won 23 state titles since the start of the streak in the 2007-08 school year and 30 championships since 2001.

“It’s something our student-athletes, coaches and the entire school community take great pride in,” said Athletic Director Jeff Newhall ’94, who has coached the girls basketball team to five state championships since 2011. “The streak is something that everyone is aware of. Every team wants to be the one to keep it alive.”

Newhall attributes the unrivaled success to a few key factors.

“You need high-quality, motivated student-athletes to start with,” he said. “Our athletic program benefits from the fact that our school offers a rigorous academic program. We are sending our kids on to very good schools, and they are receiving scholarships.”

During the streak, St. Mary’s has won state championships in eight different sports. Girls basketball and girls hockey have each won five titles, followed by boys basketball, baseball and golf with three apiece. Softball has won two championships, while football and boys hockey have each won one.

“I think it’s safe to say no other school has won at least one state championship 17 years in a row,” Newhall said. “We’ re proud to set the standard and we hope to keep it going.”
