Town-commissioned review of controversial “Gender Queer” book search exonerates Great Barrington Police
In December, Berkshire Hills Regional School District allowed a police officer to enter W.E.B. Du Bois Middle School in search of “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe. The book, which depicts a young person coming to terms with their gender identity, is a common target of right-wing banning campaigns nationwide. Outcry from town residents, students, staff, and LGBTQIA+ activists was immediate and prolific. Maria Rundle told the selectboard early this year that the gesture was at odds with Great Barrington’s efforts to present itself as an inclusive community:

Pine Plains Resident Rich Tamburrino Voted Top Nurse
Critical care nurse Rich Tamburrino, of Pine Plains, was named the 2024 Top Nurse of the Year at a celebratory dinner on May 1, hosted by Hudson Valley Magazine. Tamburrino stood out among 20 recipients of the magazine’s Excellence in Nursing Awards for his significant impact on patient care. A panel of judges, consisting of instructors from Mount Saint Mary’s College School of Nursing, selected the honorees.
Lee residents pass all Town Meeting articles, actions limit local marijuana-cultivation farms
Lee — Although some residents questioned a handful of items, Lee’s fiscal year 2025 operating budget of $22.8 million passed during the May 9 Town Meeting. That budget represents an increase of 5.22 percent year over year, given upticks in the costs of health care, retirement, energy, and education.
