Hillsboro Shooting

A Loudoun County deputy with a long gun stands in the middle of Rt. 9 in Hillsboro as part of the response to an active shooter incident June 8, 2023.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has deescalated the tactical response to the report of a shooting at a Hillsboro business Thursday afternoon.

The incident began shortly after 12 p.m. when a diner sitting outside the Stoneybrook Farm & Market reported hearing a loud noise and turned to see two men, at least one with a long gun, in the field across the street. It appeared to witnesses that a round had struck the door of the market nearby.

The Sheriff’s Office responded quickly and in force to address a potential active shooter case—closing Rt. 9 and ordering residents to remain indoors. The deputies searched the area for two hours, but found no suspects or evidence of shooting.

While most of the responding deputies were released from the scene shortly after 2 p.m., the investigation is continuing.

Rt. 9 has been reopened to traffic.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective A. Perry at 703-777–1021. You may also submit an anonymous tip by calling 703-777-1919 or using the Loudoun County Sheriff’s app.

Would love to hear the 911 call and the callers description of what was happening!

"It appeared to witnesses that a round had struck the door of the market nearby."

"The deputies searched the area for two hours, but found no suspects or evidence of shooting."

I think this pretty much sums it up - an over reaction. There was no evidence of any errant rounds despite the witnesses report that a round hit the door.

Life took me to Hillsboro today. I thought I'd have brunch at the market but that was not to be since it's not open on Saturdays. And it would have been a perfect day for lunch on their patio. However, I did take a moment to inspect the building and found absolutely no evidence of a bullet striking the building on either spot where outdoor seating is provided. One side is across from a farm and one side is across from the cemetery. No bullet holes. I don't know what happened but the market building was not hit by gunfire. I guess I'll have to FOIA the records from LCSO to see what their investigation turned up when things are concluded. Sleep soundly, denizens of Loudoun County. It appears that the Loudoun County Love Warriors have not taken up arms and engaged in domestic terrorism yet.

Regarding, “The incident began shortly after 12 p.m. when a diner sitting outside the Stoneybrook Farm & Market reported hearing a loud noise and turned to see two men, at least one with a long gun, in the field across the street. ….”in the field across the street.)

If the street is Rt. 9 (Charlestown Pike), the “field” is the Old Stone School and the Hillsboro Charter School, if the “street” is Rt. 690, the “field” is the Cemetery. The only other “street” is Gaver Mill, and there is no field “across” (beyond) it.

So, where prey tell were the two men and the long gun?

The "article" is shockingly lacking in details. I would think if a rifle round struck a door nearby it would be quite easy to confirm, especially if you were sitting outside the market's two side doors where outdoor seating is located.

The fact that the deputies so quickly concluded their investigation of an alleged shooting at an occupied building within 1000 of a school and near major roads is itself curious. And the illustrious crack journalists labeling this a "potential active shooter case" sounds a lot like hyperbole. I suppose this will be henceforth and forever known as the "FIrst Stoneybrook Farm & Market Massacre."

While I hope that LCSO does continue their investigation, I would also suggest that Loudoun Now consider engaging in actual journalism which would be a welcome change.
