The Student Success Center (SSC) at Highland Community College (HCC) sponsored a career exploration event at the Walters Wellness Center Wednesday, Feb. 22. Individuals were invited from the surrounding area who represented an assortment of professional careers.

Students interacted with 35 different professionals and had the opportunity to ask questions about their career fields. Professionals from the surrounding area represented a wide variety of professions from construction to medicine. Students interested in pursuing a career in athletics had the opportunity to speak to Tyler Lupfer from the St. Joseph Mustangs and Megan Donner, a member of the production team for the Kansas City Chiefs. Those interested in juvenile services, law enforcement or the military were able to talk to representatives from the Kansas State Police and the U.S. Marine Corps. Other fields represented include graphic design, journalism, financial advising and informational technology (IT).

“Major Mayhem is a great opportunity for students to learn from area professionals about different career options, as well as provide professionals a chance to interact with our HCC students and community. We appreciate everyone who attended and those who helped make this event possible,” said Kristy Sumpter, HCC director of advising.

“The event was awesome. I enjoyed meeting and speaking with all of professionals who were there. There was a member of the production staff from the Kansas City Chiefs and an assistant general manager from the St. Joseph Mustangs. The car wrap graphic design (Eye Candy) people were fun to talk to. The agriculture representatives were genuinely nice to talk to. The U.S. Marines were here too, and I got to do pullups and received a free T-shirt,” said HCC freshman, Jasper Bradley III (St. Joseph).

“We’re thankful for the professionals who attend our event because it provides opportunities for our students to ask questions and learn valuable information about different professions,” said Deanna Beckmann, HCC office assistant.
