HIBBING—Members of the Hibbing Police Department are squaring off with members of the Hibbing Fire Department in a friendly game of softball to benefit kids in the community.

A Guns and Hoses softball game is set for noon Sunday, May 5, at Cheever Field in Hibbing. Proceeds stay local and benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Hibbing.

The event starts at noon with a meet and greet with Hibbing Police K9 Dottie and her handler Officer Brittany Dillinger, followed by the game at 1 p.m.

Presenting Sponsor Essentia Health, along with a number of other community sponsors have made this event possible.

Proceeds from the Guns and Hoses fundraiser stay with the Hibbing Branch of the Boys & Girls Club to help cover include pay for the branch director and youth development professional staff, supplies used by the kids for different activities, food (students receive a meal and a snack each day), and mental health resources, according to Brittany Lindstrom, Development Director for the Boys & Girls Club of Hibbing.

Hibbing Police Chief Steve Estey, in an email last week, said his team of 11 is “excited to break out the Tylenol and ice packs to support a great program in our community.”

“A lot of work and dedication goes into the Boys & Girls Club and it is a great asset to have in our community,” Estey told the Mesabi Tribune. “Our community is very fortunate that the volunteers and employees and the Boys & Girls Club take pride in the children in our community and offer this great resource.”

“I am glad our department can be a part of an event like this to raise funds for the organization,” he added. “We are all looking forward to a fun day and hope several of our community members are able to come out and support the event.”

Hibbing Fire Marshal Shawn Nickila, also via email last week, shared a roster of 18 members representing the Hibbing Fire Department team.

Lindstrom said the idea for the fundraiser came about during a discussion with the club’s board of directors.

“The board and I were doing some brainstorming and Kim McLaughlin, Board Chair brought up a police versus fire hockey game that was a big hit,” she recalled. “We thought the community would be excited about it and involve other community organizations for a good cause.”

Advance tickets for the Guns and Hoses Fundraiser can be purchased for $10 online at https://bgcnorth.org/locations/hibbing/, or at the door for $12.

About the Boys & Girls Club of Hibbing

The Boys & Girls Club of Hibbing is a relatively new club, and operates under the umbrella of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland. The Hibbing Branch opened its doors in November 2022.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland offers a broad range of programs that promote academic success, good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle,” as stated on its website. “Here, kids find the safety net and one-on-one support they need to reach their full potential as caring, productive, responsible citizens.”

In June of this year the Hibbing Branch is set to move from its space at Greenhaven Elementary to a new space at Hibbing High School. The space and transportation to the program during the school year is provided by the Hibbing School District.

The program operates from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday during the school year. Summer hours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Memberships are $20 per year, but no child is ever turned away due to inability to pay. Scholarships are available.

More information is available on the Boys & Girls Club of Hibbing Facebook page, or at the Boys & Girls Clubs website link listed above.
