Hibbing High School alumni can share memories on anniversary website

HIBBING—The Hibbing High School 100th Anniversary Committee has a new website where alumni can already share their high school memories.

The website, which continues to be updated as plans are finalized, contains some photos of Hibbing High School and preliminary plans for the anniversary celebration taking place July 6 through July 13.

R.J. Thiel, a committee member and Hibbing High School Alumni, has set up the website, hhs100.org, where alumni are encouraged to share their memories of Hibbing High School and can also upload photos.

“We want to get the word out so we’ll get a good response,” Brian Ridgeway, committee member said via email last week.

“The committee eagerly welcomes and awaits memories and photos from alumni as well as from current and former Hibbing High School faculty, staff, and students,” Kim McLaughlin, a member of the 100th Anniversary Committee.

When planning for the anniversary began last fall, McLaughlin and Kathy Nyberg, both members of the Hibbing School Board, stepped up as co-chairs. Since Nyberg’s death in January, Stefanie Carlson, Ron Wirkkula and Bob Kearney have joined McLaughlin and are the core committee.

“Since Kathy’s passing the entire group, who had only met a few times prior to her passing, has stepped up,” McLaughlin told the Mesabi Tribune via email last week. “Many others have stepped up in a big way as well and so it truly is a collective effort of many passionate alumni and community members who are working to make this happen.”

“Not a meeting goes by where we don’t think of Kathy,” McLaughlin wrote. “Although she and I co-chaired this event together for only a very short time before her passing, not a day goes by where I don’t sincerely miss her passion, her vision, and her commitment to this celebration.”

“When Kathy and I started down the path we had thought about a printed book to commemorate Hibbing High School’s academics, athletics, and arts,” McLaughlin said. “We quickly realized that shifting to an electronic platform could provide a living document, one that could be added to and updated hopefully for the next 100 years and beyond. We were also hoping a website might be a way for alumni and others to more easily stay connected to Hibbing High School.”

McLaughlin said plans are coming together for the anniversary celebration, which includes an event at 7 p.m. each evening, Saturday, July 6 through Friday, July 12.

“There are very talented and accomplished alumni who are going to be sharing their talents, memories and stories,” McLaughlin said.

“Throughout the week, and as part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Hibbing High School, there will also be tours of Hibbing High School and guided tours of Hibbing on a vintage Greyhound bus,” she said. “The celebratory week will conclude with the Hibbing Jubilee Parade on Saturday, July 13.”

“We are thrilled to have former faculty, staff, and students come back and re-visit the beautiful historic Hibbing High School. Bluejackets from throughout the last century will have a wonderful opportunity to reminisce with classmates, faculty, and staff, past and present, walk through the halls of the Historic Hibbing High School and take a tour of Hibbing on a vintage Greyhound Bus,” McLaughlin said. “No doubt, Bluejacket pride will be shining brightly!”

Alumni wanting to share a story, talent, or photo, either in person or electronically is asked to visit the reunion website at hibbinghs100.org, or by email at anecdote@hibbinghs100.org.
