Morton breaks school record as Red Hawks host invitational track meet
Hiawatha’s Dani Morton saved her best performance of the season so far for her home track, posting a time of 26.45 seconds in the 200 meter race, to best the former school record of 26.6 seconds, previously held by Brianna Schmitz. Morton’s performance was just one of the outstanding results the Red Hawks put up in an impressive outing at the Hiawatha Invitational on Friday.

Veterans groups cut back Memorial Day cemetery tour schedule
A Memorial Day tradition in Jackson County — a joint tour of Jackson County’s cemeteries by two veterans’ organizations in Holton — is being cut back this year due to declining membership in both groups, according to Pat Fontaine, commanding officer of Mary L. Bair American Legion Post 44 in Holton.
Kansas felon accused of new crimes after arrest
ATCHISON COUNTY —A Kansas felon is back in jail on new allegations after a weekend arrest. On April 14, police arrested 52-year-old Jason E. Alexander of Atchison on requested charges for aggravated domestic battery and domestic battery in the 1900 block Harper Drive, according to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson. He was also arrested on a District Court warrants for failure to appear in court.
Animals to benefit from Doniphan County Dog Jog
A Dog Jog and 5K Run is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Doniphan County 4-H Fairgrounds, located at 100 N. Boder St. in Troy, Kansas. The Doniphan County Pet Rescue is planning this family- and pet-friendly event. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to Pet Rescue for care of the animals in the shelter. The event will take place rain or shine.

Beth Jenson and Joan Keighley, Alpha Delta Kappa – Beta Chapter members, a female educator’s sorority, have been involved in the Junior Iditarod since 2014. Beth, a retired eight grade English teacher at USD430 Everest Middle School, became interested in the Iditarod race when reading Jack London’s “Call of the Wild” with her students. Joan, also a retired Everest Middle School teacher, had friends Leslie and Claudette Stevens of Falls City, NE who introduced them to the Junior Iditarod.
