Moo Thru bringing new ice cream shop to Herndon

Great news for local fans of the much-loved Moo Thru ice cream brand. A new Moo Thru ice cream — the first in the immediate suburbs of Northern Virginia — will be opening soon in Herndon.

The ice cream store will be paired with a new coffee shop called Old Town Coffee. The two sister establishments are coming to 317 Spring Street. It’s taking over a space that was previously occupied by an AR Workshop DIY craft studio.

Even more exciting for fans with a sweet tooth — while construction is going on inside the space, a new Moo Thru ice cream truck is scheduled to be parked outside selling ice cream all summer long. The truck should be ready to go in the next week or so.

If you’re not familiar, Moo Thru was founded by dairy farmer Ken Smith back in 2010 in Remington VA, about an hour south of Ashburn. The ice cream is slow churned at the Moo Thru facility there and crowds gather for sundaes and cones all season long.

There are a few other Moo Thru locations in Virginia and a few Moo Thru ice cream trucks rolling around, but we’re told the new Herndon location is the first brick-and-mortar in the close-in NoVa suburbs.

Next door at Old Town Coffee, the owners plan to offer locally-sourced organic coffees and espresso drinks along with other items.

No official date has been set for the opening of the Moo Thru/Old Town Coffee storefront — right now they are hoping for late July or early August. In the meanwhile, keep an eye out for the brightly adorned ice cream truck to get your Moo Thru fix.
