The City of Henderson, in partnership with the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation of Nevada, presents a free three-day festival in recognition of Juneteenth.
The festival begins on June 16 at Water Street Plaza.
Event officials said the festival will feature African American music, dance, and cultural performances, as well as inspiring plays and poetry.
Day 1: Friday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. | The Spirit of Harriet Tubman
Performed by the award-winning actress Leslie McCurdy, "The Spirit of Harriet Tubman" is a play that will serve as the festival's opening performance. The play recreates the life of the renowned "conductor" of the Underground Railroad. McCurdy is the recipient of the 2017 Vigor International Award and 2014 and 2000 Mayor's Awards for "Artist of the Year" and "Outstanding Performing Artist" of Windsor Ontario.
Day 2: Saturday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m. | Songs of Freedom
Songs of Freedom by the Vegas City Opera will feature Dr. Richard L. Hodges. The Wall Street Journal called Dr. Richard L. Hodges a "Powerhouse Baritone." Dr. Hodges is currently an Assistant Professor, Director of Voice Studies at Western Washington University and is touring with the recent revival of Anthony Davis' "X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X."
Day 3: Monday, June 19 at 5:30 p.m.| Celebration of Live Music Poetry and Exhibits
The festival continues on Monday, June 19, with the Celebration of Live Music, Poetry, and Exhibit from award-winning performers, including 2022 United States Youth Poet Laureate Alyssa Gaines, OkCello, and the Woody Woods Quartet featuring Paul Stubblefield.
