4 hospitalized after gunman fires into crowd on Long Island

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A gunman opened fire into a crowd on Long Island Saturday night, wounding four people who all required hospitalization, police said.

The unknown gunman drew a pistol and fired at the crowd of people standing on the sidewalk on Spencer Place near Jerusalem Avenue in Hempstead just before 10:40 p.m., according to police.

He fled across Jerusalem Avenue and down Searing Street.

The four adult victims were all transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

A description of the shooter has not been released at this time. Any motive or connection to the victims wasn't immediately clear.

The investigation is ongoing.
