More than 53,000 hoverboards are being recalled over concerns about batteries that can overheat and cause a fire, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The voluntary recall concerns certain Jetson Rogue self-balancing scooters, or hoverboards, that were sold at Target and on the company’s website.
Local officials said that a 42-volt Jetson Rogue was the point of origin for the fire, according to a news release from CPSC. Why the hoverboard caught fire remains “undetermined,” according to the CPSC.
According to the CPSC, one of the complaints about the hoverboards concerns a 10-year-old girl and her 15-year-old sister’s death in an April 2022 fire in Hellertown, Pennsylvania.
The lithium-ion battery packs in the hoverboards can overheat, posing a fire hazard, the agency added.
CPSC advised consumers to “immediately” stop using and stop charging the recalled 42-volt version of the self-balancing scooters and contact Jetson for a full refund.
Jetson said the voluntary recall was made “out of an abundance of caution.”
The recalled self-balancing scooters/hoverboards were sold at Target stores nationwide and online at www.target.com from August 2018 through June 2019 and at www.ridejetson.com from January 2019 through November 2021 for between $100 and $150.
