On Sept 21, 2024, Howard University and Hampton University face off in the highly anticipated HBCU football matchup “Battle of the Real HU.” Hampton has dominated this rivalry for seven straight games , including last year’s nail-biting 35-34 win . Now, Howard is looking to end that streak and reclaim the title of the “Real HU.”

Hampton’s Strong Start and QB Split

Hampton has started the 2024 season strong, boasting a balanced and high-powered offense. The Pirates are averaging over 400 yards per game, thanks to a unique quarterback system that splits time between Chris Zellous and Malcolm Mays. Zellous, a dual-threat, has already accumulated 516 total yards, while Mays has thrown for 291 yards and three touchdowns. This rotation makes it difficult for defenses to settle in.

Running back Elijah Burris is another standout, averaging nearly 90 rushing yards per game. Hampton’s defense has also been tough, holding opponents to 235 yards per game and recording 8 sacks in three games. Linebacker Tre Everett has been a force, with 2 sacks to his name.

Howard’s Preparation, Depth, and Defensive Standouts

Howard University has been building momentum under head coach Larry Scott. After a solid win against Morehouse, Scott highlighted the importance of developing depth, allowing more players to get game experience. “We were able to play a lot of guys,” Scott said. “That’s important as we build through the non-conference schedule.”

Howard will rely on backup quarterback Jalen Tolbert, who has stepped in for injured starter Ja’Shawn Scroggins. Tolbert has already proven himself, throwing for 267 yards and four touchdowns in his debut as a starter. Coach Scott has confidence in his quarterback depth, saying, “It makes you feel really good as a coach when you have someone like Jalen step up.”

On the defensive side, Howard has been formidable, racking up 10 sacks in three games. Leading the charge is Kenny Gallop, who has 29 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a half-sack. Defensive end Noah Miles has also made his presence known, recording 4 sacks so far this season. Howard’s defense will need to be at its best to contain Hampton’s versatile offense.

    What’s at Stake

This game is more than just a contest—it’s about HBCU pride. The “Battle of the Real HU” is a rivalry with deep meaning for Howard and Hampton. Howard has come close to winning the past two years but fell short in the fourth quarter. Coach Scott understands the significance of this matchup: “This is a pride game,” he said during the weekly MEAC coaches call. “We’ve had this game going into the fourth quarter two years in a row and lost it. We’ve got to be ready for a four-quarter battle.”

Hampton’s defense, which allows just 235 yards per game, has proven it can shut down both the run and the pass, making this a tough challenge for Howard. However, Howard’s defense has shown it can pressure opposing quarterbacks and make key stops, giving the Bison a fighting chance.

    Looking Ahead

For Howard to break Hampton’s streak, they’ll need to play a complete game—strong defense, smart offense, and no costly mistakes. Hampton’s balanced attack and experience will make this a tough task, but Howard is motivated and ready to fight for the title of the “Real HU.”

With both teams putting everything on the line, this game will surely be a four-quarter battle. Fans of HBCU football won’t want to miss it, as one team will leave with the bragging rights after the “Battle of the Real HU.”
