Perry County Little League hosts Opening Day
Hazard Perry County Little League had its opening day April 13, celebrating its 70th season, making it one of the oldest little leagues in the state, according to officials. The league consists of over 400 players with multiple divisions including tee-ball, challenger, minor and major leagues for baseball and softball. Jody Maggard, league president, acknowledged the Perry County Fiscal Court and City of Hazard for their continued support and honorary pitches were thrown by Mayor Donald “Happy” Mobelini, Hazard Independent Schools Superintendent Sondra Combs and Perry County Schools Athletic Director Bobby Keith Dixon. "It was a great day,” said Maggard. “We had 14 games overall. Games were competitive, bleachers were full of fans and the concession stand was non-stop. It was a full day of Little League fun. The HP season is off to a great start. Our league benefits from a community that supports Little League. Local businesses, organizations, churches, and others, make significant contributions to assure the success of Hazard Perry County Little League. We can't thank them enough. I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the games, it's a blast."

Drivers who use Ky. 2022 (Squabble Creek Road) in Perry County will need to find an alternate route on Thursday, April 18. The road will be closed between milepoints 0.0 and 0.2 from 8 a.m. until at least 4 p.m. for a paving project. This is between the Ky. 484 intersection near Saul and the Owsley County line.

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT/Gray News) - Gray Television, Inc. has announced that its daily, 30-minute news magazine InvestigateTV+ has been renewed for a second season in 2024-2025. The renewal is the direct result of impressive, double-digit ratings growth in the show’s debut season. InvestigateTV+ built an audience throughout its first season with an average of 25% growth with Adults 18+ across all Gray markets since its launch in September 2023 (Source: Nielsen).
Officials: Agreement will help enhance Perry County emergency response
In the July 2022 flood, officials say, the need for better communication capabilities across Perry County’s responding agencies was underscored. During its April 9 meeting, the Perry County Fiscal Court approved a mutual aid agreement with Kentucky State Police, supported by two grants, which is intended to make communications more effective.
Floods, COVID, attendance continue to factor in Perry Schools’ budget
As the Perry County Schools Board of Education has begun its budgeting process for the coming year, the 2022 flood and COVID-19 pandemic continue to be factors, officials say. In its March meeting, the BOE unveiled its budget draft for the 2024-2025 school year. Financial Advisor Jody Maggard said the pandemic-era Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) funds continue to be a factor in the district’s finances.
