KAHULUI, Hawaii (KITV4) -- Maui police ask drivers to not drink - or use drugs - and drive, during this graduation season and Memorial Day weekend.
MPD says in March, its Traffic Division conducted 12 Sobriety Checkpoints and one Saturation Patrol at various locations. Officers arrested 28 people for operating a vehicle under the influence of intoxicants. There was one near-fatal motor vehicle collision that month.
They arrested 25 drivers in April Sobriety Checkpoints though there were three fatal and one near-fatal motor vehicle collision.
The department wants people to be safe on the roads, especially since Thursday is Maui's last high school graduation.
"Have designated drivers, and if you see intoxicated people entering cars, call 911 so we can get someone to assess and take action," advises Sgt. MIke Crowe, Chief of Staff for MPD. He adds if you've been drinking, call a taxi or car service.
