Turnpike traffic reopened after gas line hit at Hollywood construction site
A ruptured gas line in Hollywood prompted officials to closed Florida’s Turnpike late Friday morning and evacuate the area where the pipe was hit. The turnpike was shut down in both directions between Hollywood Boulevard and Griffin Road shortly before 11 a.m., and reopened around 2 p.m. after the line was capped, Hollywood Fire Rescue said. The line ruptured in the area of North 62nd Avenue and Arthur Street after it was hit by a construction excavator. The line that was struck runs the length of the turnpike, said Chai Kauffman, a Hollywood Fire Rescue spokeswoman.

Florida seniors hitchhike to church after bus service walks on contract
STUART — Lilly Giffin, 77, stuck her thumb out as she and her 79-year-old friend stood curbside on Ocean Boulevard with a whirl of traffic passing. It had been five days since MARTY bus service stopped suddenly and indefinitely , and Giffin decided to take matters into her own hands. Giffin, who is recovering from a stroke, and Suzi Stonecipher hitchhiked to church. The Grace Place is about 7 miles from Giffin's home at Lucille Apartments. The women said a prayer before grabbing their walking canes and embarking on their spiritual journey as a form of protest. "Protect us, as we walk to you, Father," Giffin prayed. MARTY bus service used to pick them up at their doorsteps through the ADA Paratransit Service. It was a lifeline for the women, who don't own a car and have mobility issues. A friend had given Giffin a ride to church the previous day, a Sunday. But she enjoys going to church more than that, attending about a couple of times each week.
