The Maryland State police have identified the two people killed in the crash on Interstate-95 Thursday evening.
According to police, 45-year-old Dennis English Jr., of Baltimore and 64-year-old John Mastropietro, of Ocean Port, New Jersey were killed during the crash between their two vehicles. Mastropietro was taken to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the accident occurred around 6:00 p.m. Thursday on I-95 exit 77 at MD-24 in Abingdon. An investigation shows that a Subaru Forester, driven by Mastropeitro was struck head on by a GMC Terrian, driven by English Jr., after it became airborne and overturned into the northbound lanes of I-95.
According to police, witnesses reported seeing the GMC SUV traveling at a high rate of speed when it lost control, crossed over two lanes and overturned across the guardrail. The cause and contributing factors involved in this crash remain under investigation. All possible causes are being considered including excessive speed and possible impairment.
Two passengers from the Subaru were taken to Shock Trauma for treatment of their injuries. They have been identified as Denise Berlin, 60, and Jade Mastropietro, 26, both of Ocean Port, New Jersey.
All lanes of I-95 north and south were shut down to allow a Maryland State Police helicopter to land. Maryland State Police confirmed that troopers are investigating. All lanes of I-95 north were re-opened as of 10:20 p.m. Thursday.
