HARBOR SPRINGS — A time-honored tradition is back, with Bowling Down Main Street returning to downtown Harbor Springs from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.

What first started as a joke became reality, said Bonnie Kulp, executive director of the Harbor Springs Area Chamber of Commerce.

During spring break, the streets of downtown Harbor Springs are so quiet, people would joke that “you could bowl down Main Street.” So, they made it a reality.

In collaboration with Northern Lights Recreation — who provides the pins and bowling balls — the event is a kid-friendly option for families that don’t travel during spring break.

In addition to getting a chance to bowl down Main Street, children will have a chance to pick up coupons from Northern Lights Recreation for free bowling. Johan’s Bakery will also be offering free hot chocolate and donuts for children.

“It's just a really child-friendly, kid-focused event,” Kulp said.

When the festivities kick off at noon, Kulp said, the sound of a cannon will ring.

Like the bowling sentiment, Kulp said, people have joked that Harbor Springs is so quiet during spring break you could shoot off a cannon downtown and nobody would know. Then, she was challenged to get one for the event.

“I haven't figured out all the logistics yet because safety, obviously, is paramount and I don't want to scare anybody, but we will have a cannon downtown for Bowling Down Main,” Kulp said.

Bowling Down Main Street also follows the Harbor Springs Easter egg hunt, which kicks off at 11 a.m. on March 30 at Zorn Park.
