HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — A man died in a single-vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday morning in the westbound lanes of I-70.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the crash occurred around 2 a.m. on I-70 WB in a construction zone between County Road 400 W and Mt. Comfort Road.
The sheriff’s department identified the driver as 24-year-old Jordan Collins and said he was the only person in the car. His Hyundai Sonata was westbound on I-70 when it hit the guardrail on the north side of the interstate shoulder.
The vehicle then rolled over, coming to rest on its roof in the high-speed lane of I-70 westbound.
Collins, who previously lived in Greenfield but had an Indianapolis address, was pronounced dead at the scene and wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, police said. Witnesses told investigators his car had passed them at a “very high rate of speed, driving recklessly.”
The sheriff’s department said speed and alcohol were suspected as contributing factors in the crash, which closed the interstate for more than two hours for investigation and cleanup.
The crash remains under investigation, with toxicology results pending.
