HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton City Council approved new regulations for short-term rentals in the city on Wednesday.

During the meeting, discussed a proposal from the Planning Commission in regards to short-term rentals, including Airbnb and Vrbo .

    The newly approved regulation include:

    • The creation of zoned districts, in which 1% of residences in each zone could be used as a short-term rental.
    • Rentals must be 500 feet apart.
    • People who have an existing business would be allowed to continue operating, even if that zone is over the cap.
    • The permitting process would become more streamlined and less costly. Applications would be approved administratively if they meet requirements – until the caps were reached in the zone.
    • Some of those requirements include sufficient off-street parking, fire safety controls, limits on the number of renters based on size, limits on events, business license, paying applicable taxes and listing of a person responsible for each rental with a phone number to call in case of issues.
