Newport News man who crashed into trooper’s car on I-64 in Hampton had outstanding warrant

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – A man was arrested after police say he crashed into a state trooper’s car Thursday morning on Interstate 64 in Hampton.

According to VSP, the crash occurred around 7:31 a.m. on eastbound I-64 at the North King Street Bridge. Police say the trooper was on a traffic stop when a driver, 20-year-old Michael Alton Lewis of Newport News, ran off the road and sideswiped his vehicle.

No injuries were reported and Lewis was taken into custody. Police say he had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear, and he was charged with failure to maintain lane and no valid operator’s license in connection to the crash.
