HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton Police have announced an arrest, following a hazmat scene on Grimes Road Wednesday afternoon where a man was found dead.

The Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue responded to a medical call Wednesday around 2 p.m. and found a man dead inside a home. They also found items used to make meth.

As a precautionary measure, Hampton Police closed Grimes Road between E. Pembroke Avenue and Kensington Drive while they investigated, and several homes were evacuated.

Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the Virginia State Police Hazmat team are assisting with the investigation.

A Thursday morning update from police said officers arrested 31-year-old Ann McQuade in connection to an illegal narcotic investigation. She has been charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and conspiring to manufacture methamphetamine.

Police say an investigation showed the man’s death is not connected to the illegal narcotics. They have not released his cause of death.

Jacqueline Russell has lived in the area since 1974. Her daughter lives in her old home on Grimes Road, just houses down from the scene.

She was shocked to learn something like this happened.

“Unbelievable because I lived here and nothing like this ever happened before,” she said. “It’s just really sad to see the community go down like that. Someone loses their life. It’s just really sad.”

Russell described the neighborhood as “really nice.”

She said she’s seen some shifts though, as the area has slowly turned into a rental community.

Russell said most people were lovely to talk with, but this situation has her questioning how safe the community is.

“I always thought it was safe. I don’t know now,” she said.
