Polson Lube is excited to join Ronan with second location
Polson Lube is in the process of constructing a new location off Round Butte Road, next to the Ronan VFW, and father-and-son owners, Dennis and Nick Baughman, are excited to join the community this August. Dennis said the new location's goal is to create a better customer experience. He explained that, at the Polson shop, the current influx of customers is increasing wait times. He also added that this will be more convenient for their many customers driving in from the southern portion of the valley. The new location, which will be called Ronan Lube, aims to be more user-friendly as well, with twice the waiting area, a larger shop and deeper service pits. “We're a quick oil change, and we don't want to have people wait so much, so this will just kind of ease it down here a little bit,” Dennis said. They have hired three new employees to start at the new location, who are currently being trained. They, along with two current employees and Dennis, will be heading down to kick off Ronan Lube. Dennis said that from there, they will probably bring on a full-time store manager once the store is established, and Nick will

Letter to the Editor: Making it right
In a world where it can sometimes feel difficult to get quality follow-through, I want to publicly commend a local business that truly stands by its word. Recently, Martel Construction conducted a final walkthrough of the landscaping at the new North Valley Middle School (NVMS) facility. A few issues were identified, and without hesitation, Martel promised to "fix the wrongs." They didn't just fix them; they showed up in full force. This past Monday evening at 4:45 p.m.—in stifling 85-degree heat—about a dozen Martel trucks and 18 employees arrived on-site. They spent the evening hauling heavy rock, replacing the underlying weed mat, and meticulously putting everything back in place. I know firsthand that this was not a fun or easy task, especially after a long workday in the summer heat. This is exactly how businesses build a lasting, respected name for themselves. NVMS is incredibly grateful to Martel Construction for their integrity, accountability, and unwavering commitment to excellence. They made it right, and it did not go unnoticed. Gratefully, Deidre Corson, executive director, North Valley Music School

New Glacier Bank expected by April 2027
The corner of Nucleus Avenue and Highway 2 will be transformed in the coming months as Glacier Bank is building a new building at the location that will not only give customers and staff a new building, but will enhance the nearby falls into a more attractive place to relax. Fifty years ago, the original structure was built at the location and named Glacier National Bank. Early investors included local businessmen Dr. Michael Allen, Doug Remick, James Groschupf and Roger Elliott. The new bank was capitalized with $700,000 and shares of stock sold at $280 apiece. Construction started in 1975 and was completed in 1976. Glacier Bank, (sans national) however, actually has roots in Kalispell. It opened in 1955 in downtown as First Federal Savings and Loan. The staff of two, back in 1955, has now grown to over 260 employees in 13 branches across Western Montana, with many more branches across the West. Today Glacier Bancorp, Inc. is a publicly traded regional bank with divisions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada. In 1989, First Federal acquired Glacier National Bank of Columbia Falls. A year later, the company changed the name of the holding company to

Libby foresters honored for their careers in management
The Montana State Society of American Foresters (SAF) recently held their annual state conference at Lubrecht Experimental Forest, located 30 miles northeast of Missoula in the Blackfoot River drainage. This 21,000-plus acre tract is managed by the University of Montana College of Forestry and Conservation. This conference was a mix of indoor seminars and outdoor demonstrations, including a look at a number of forest management research projects being implemented by undergraduate forestry students. At the evening awards banquet, state officers recognized two members of the Libby Chapter of SAF for their contributions in 2025. Former Lincoln County Forester, Ed Levert was awarded as the statewide Citizen of the Year “For demonstrating significant effort in advancement of the profession, especially through public eduction and service to SAF.” As a dedicated career forester, and over 50 years with SAF, Levert has continuously demonstrated what it is to be a practitioner. Ed recently stepped down as Chair of the Forest Stewardship Foundation, after serving for the past 20 years and is a member of the Kootenai Forest Stakeholders Collaborative. Russ Gautreaux was recognized and awarded the statewide Forester of the Year ‘Recognizing Outstanding Professionalism in Forestry and Active Service in SAF”. Russ has

Bio Station Finds ‘Forever Chemicals’ and Pharmaceuticals in Flathead Lake Watershed
When scientists at the Flathead Lake Biological Station collected water samples to test for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the Flathead water basin for the first time last fall, Director Jim Elser said they hoped the results would come back negative. The station, operated by the University of Montana, had not previously tested for the chemicals in the basin due to the expensive cost of analyses, which run at around $500 per sample, Elser said.

State awards Farm to Market Bridge replacement contract
A Belgrade construction firm has been selected to build the new bridge across Libby Creek on Farm to Market Road, south of Libby. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) announced in a July 9 press release that Battle Ridge Builders was selected to do the work on the $4.7 million project. The bridge was one of many structures and roads that were damaged in the December 2025 flood that caused millions of dollars of damage across south Lincoln County. “Our team has been working on restoring access since before the flood water receded and has done everything possible to fast-track project delivery,” said John Schmidt, MDT Missoula District Administrator. “We have designed the new bridge to be more resilient to future flood events.” Officials said work is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks and will include demolishing the current structure, installing bridge pilings and beams and pouring concrete. The bridge will be 28 feet wide and 303 feet long. The destroyed structure was 150 feet long. The project is scheduled for completion in late February 2027, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. Farm to Market Road will remain closed to traffic until construction is complete. Officials asked those using
