State corrections officer on administrative leave from Hamburg arrested on gun charge

    By Katie Skoog,

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A New York State corrections officer who was on administrative leave was arrested and charged by criminal complaint on gun charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Officials said Matthew Zamborowski, 48 and of Hamburg, was charged by criminal complaint with possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person under a qualifying domestic violence order of protection. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to the complaint, on May 6, an Erie County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on Route 219 after determining the vehicle had a surrendered plate. Zamborowski then allegedly told the deputy he was concealing a firearm on his right hip and said he was a NYS corrections officer, the attorney’s office said.

Officials said when the sheriff asked for his license, Zamborowski said he did not have one and that there may be issues with it due to unpaid tickets in court.

When the deputy returned to his vehicle and confirmed Zamborowski’s license status, he saw that he was served an order of protection, which mandated him to surrender all firearms in his possession, officials said.

Zamborowski was then arrested. The complaint also said that he allegedly had five additional firearms in the trunk of his vehicle.

The attorney’s office said a check with the NYS Albion Correctional Facility determined that Zamborowski was on administrative leave since February, and that he should have returned his badge and state ID.

He was then taken to the Erie County Holding Center.
