An off-duty Shiner police officer landed behind bars early Saturday after he allegedly climbed behind the wheel intoxicated by about twice the legal limit, and was reportedly pulled over in Hallettsville.

Michael Hudson was taken into custody and booked into the Lavaca County Jail at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, June 3. He was given a breathalyzer test, which reportedly registered a blood-alcohol reading that was “greater than or equal to 0.15,” the arrest report said.

Any blood-alcohol rating of 0.08 or greater is considered legally intoxicated in the state of Texas.

Hudson, 48, was booked on the single charge of driving while intoxicated with a BAC greater than or equal to 0.15.

He was released later that day after posting bail on the $5,000 bond assigned him by Lavaca County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Travis Hill.

Prior to joining the Shiner Police Department in 2021, Hudson spent a few months working patrols for the Moulton Police Department. He had more than 15 years in law enforcement with different law enforcement agencies

Several questions regarding the details of Hudson arrest were submitted to Chief Randy Schlauch of the Hallettsville Police Department early Monday. Schlauch said he forwarded materials to the Attorney General’s office to clarify which items can and cannot be discussed to better protect Hudson’s right to a free trial. Those had had not yet been returned as of late Monday evening, and Schlauch will be out of town Tuesday for the remainder of the week.

Chief Kevin Kelso with the Shiner Police Department said that his department would be conducting an internal investigation into the matter, the details of which he really couldn’t discuss until that investigation was completed.
