The 5th Grade students at Sacred Heart Catholic School recently participated in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon program and raised $2358.25 to help kids battling cancer and other deadly diseases.

This year’s amount raised by the SHCS students adds to over $14,000 raised by past 5th grade classes at the school.

The Hallettsville community as well as the Sacred Heart Catholic School faculty and staff supported the students by donating in honor of their participation in the program.

“We are very proud of our students for working so hard to raise money for St. Jude through Math-A-Thon,” coordinator of the event Doris Fenner said.

Sacred Heart Catholic School principal, Kevin Haas, added, “Our school, students and community have helped St. Jude in its work to find cures and save children.”

According to Fenner, the Math-A-Thon allows students to build and practice essential math skills while they raise funds for kids battling cancer at St. Jude.

Haas said the program involves a teacher serving as a volunteer coordinator for at their school with the students participating by solving math problems in a printed Funbook.

Haas said the students ask family, friends, and Sacred Heart staff members for donations in support of their participation in the Math-A-Thon.

All donations are sent to St. Jude, where no child is ever turned away because of the family’s inability to pay.

“The Math-A-Thon is one of America’s largest education-based fundraisers with more  than 10,000 schools across the country participating in the program,” Haas said. “The Math-A-Thon is also one of the most successful fundraising campaigns for St. Jude, having raised millions of dollars since its inception.”

“The future 5th graders hope they can participate in the program when they get into the 5th grade,” Fenner said. “I along with the 5th grade students would like to thank everyone who donated to this very important charity.”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is considered one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers.
