HONOLULU (KHON2) — On Monday, the City and County of Honoluluʻs Department of Design and Construction began repairs and rehabilitation work on Haleiwa’s Rainbow Bridge over Anahulu Stream.

Rainbow Bridge is over one hundred years old and was originally built in 1921. City and County officials agreed the wooden bridge needed a facelift and will spend the next year completing the project.

Reports said the ultimate goal of the project is to “protect the bridge from corrosion and improve its structural integrity, thereby enhancing the longevity of the bridge and public safety.”

Crews will work on the bridge Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to install cathodic protection anodes, paint the bridge, and repair cracks.

According to the City, the bridge will be open to vehicular traffic but officials warn there may be a temporary lane closure when necessary. Reports noted that only one sidewalk will be open for pedestrians.

Though temporary lane closures are not planned, both motorists and pedestrians are advised to allow themselves extra time to get to their destinations.

Additionally, only half of the waterway will be available for recreational use “between Kahuku abutment and center pier or the Waialua abutment and center pier.”

Those who may have questions or comments are asked to call the DDC at (808) 768-8400.
