HADLEY, Mass. - A man was killed in a collision between a jet ski and a boat on the Connecticut River over the holiday weekend and the Hadley Fire Department is warning boat owners to make sure they're properly trained before heading out onto the water.

What You Need To Know

  • A man was killed Sunday in a jet ski accident on the Connecticut River

  • The Hadley Fire Department said many people have gone out and purchased boats since the pandemic

  • Every boat should have a life vest, an air horn and a buoy

  • All personal motorboats must be registered and have the certification visible in front of the craft

"So after the pandemic, a lot of people bought boats to go out on the river, to do something to get out of the house during the pandemic," said deputy fire chief Evan Briant. "So there's lot of boats that we see on the river now, a lot of people are doing recreational boating now, jet skis."

Briant said training is available from the Coast Guard and it's vital that every boat is equipped properly, including life vests, air horns and a buoy in case someone ends up in danger in the water. He also said its important the boat is in proper working order.

"We also want to make that sure people maintain their boats," Briant said. "Make sure there engines are working properly, they're not leaking fuel into the water. Sometimes people don't connect the gas to the engine right away and you might have some leakage into the water. That's a big safety concern from our point. So make sure everything is tight, every is connected property."

Briant said all personal motorboats must be registered by the Massachusetts Environmental Police Department and have the certification visible in the front of the craft. Briant said people can also sign up for boat training courses online.
