Drunken driver hit stopped ambulance in Pa. crash: police

Drunken driving was to blame in an accident involving a stopped ambulance at a Hackettstown intersection, police said.

The crash happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when a 30-year-old Independence Township man was driving west along Route 46, police said. When the driver attempted to turn right onto Route 604 north, the car struck the stopped Long Valley First Aid Squad ambulance, according to police.

The ambulance was stationed at a red traffic signal at Route 604 south at the time of impactm police said. While speaking to the driver of the car, an officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage, police said.

The driver of the car suffered a minor injury but refused medical treatment, according to police. Police said both the ambulance driver and a front seat passenger in that vehicle were not injured.

The driver of the Kia car charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and failure to observe traffic lanes. The driver was then released pending a court hearing.

Also assisting at the scene was the Hackettstown First Aid and Rescue Squad.
