Bear, yes, the animal, spotted in Gurnee

GURNEE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Parents at a Gurnee daycare got a bit of a shock Wednesday morning when a bear was spotted near the center.

Gurnee police said they did not find the bear after getting calls around 8:45 a.m. about a possible sighting near Hunt Club Road and Route 132 near the Gurnee Mills Mall.

CBS-2 reported a parent at the Hunt Club Kindercare shot a video that seems to show a black bear running through the parking lot.

Parent Jessica Francoeur told the station she was alarmed.

“I thought it was a little scary…to have a bear so near like that, and then there’s kids, thank God they were inside…the play yard is gated, so that’s good too,” Francoeur said.

The daycare informed parents all the kids were ok. Gurnee police want you to call them if you see the bear,  but don’t approach it.

Black bears are rare in such populated areas and the state’s Department of Natural Resources said some bears come to Illinois from Wisconsin or Missouri, with only five spotted in the last five years.
