Guns found in book bag at Laney High, car at Grovetown High
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - In separate incidents this week, guns have been discovered at two local high schools.
In Richmond County
Laney High School parents were told in a letter that a gun was found Monday in a student’s book bag during an administrative search Monday on the campus at 1339 Laney Walker Blvd.
The Richmond County School System police recovered the weapon and formally charged the student, parents were told in the letter. The incident is being addressed by law enforcement and the district’s code of conduct.
Arrest warrants identified the student as 17-year-old Keon Lamar Bell was arrested Tuesday on charges of having a weapon on school grounds or at a school function, possession of a pistol or revolver by someone under 18 and possession of an article with altered identification. The black Taurus 9 mm semi-automatic handgun was found around 9:15 a.m. Monday, according to the arrest warrants.
The incident came 10 days after a student at Glenn Hills High School was caught with a gun and 11 days after a student at Butler Hugh School was caught with a knife in his fanny pack.
In Columbia County
Meanwhile, a gun was discovered Tuesday inside a vehicle on the Grovetown High School campus, parents were told in a letter.
It was found after three students were seen in a vehicle, unauthorized, in the school parking lot.
Upon further investigation, a firearm was found in the car under a seat and was immediately secured away from the students, the Columbia County School District said.
The responsible party has been charged with possession of a firearm on campus and possession of Schedule I narcotics, the district said.
The students will also be held accountable according to the code of conduct.
No direct threat was made to the school, students or staff.
The Columbia County School District has had a few school weapons incidents this month, including a gun being found in a student’s diaper bag.
