Calaveras’ 75-game MLL winning streak ends with 6-4 loss to Sonora
All things must come to an end. After winning 75 consecutive Mother Lode League games, the Calaveras High School softball team suffered its first league loss since 2018. The Red Hawks lost to the Sonora Wildcats 6-4 on Friday night in Sonora. With this loss, Calaveras and Sonora are now tied for first place in the Mother Lode League standings, both with 8-1 records.

Angels Camp’s Mark Twain Statue To Temporarily Relocate For Restoration
Angels Camp, CA — One of the most recognizable aspects of Utica Park in Angels Camp will be removed for a few months as it goes through a restoration. The Mark Twain statue was donated to the city by film giant Warner Brothers in 1944 when the Frederic March film, The Adventures of Mark Twain, premiered at the Angels Camp Theatre. City leaders say the statue has served as a timeless symbol of literary excellence and community pride.
Farmers Market In Standard Has New Operator
Standard, CA — The Tuolumne County Resource Conservation District will be opening a new Standard Farmer’s Market starting next month and running into October. The group made the decision because the former Peaceful Valley Farmers Market was not planning to operate this year. The new market will be set up in the same parking lot on Peaceful Valley Road in East Sonora. It will be open every Friday from 4-8 pm from May 3 through October 18.

Update: Structure Fire In Sonora
Update at 5:36 p.m.: Fire crews have contained an afternoon blaze on Rough and Ready Trail off Jamestown Road. CAL Fire dispatch reports that the garage was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the property located in the 19900 block of Rough and Ready Trail near Panorama Place. They added that the fire did not spread to nearby vegetation. Reportedly, one resident and a dog were able to flee the home before firefighters arrived. CAL Fire noted that the house was detached from the garage and suffered no damage.
Old Priest Road To Close For Maintenance
Tuolumne County, CA – Work on Old Priest Grade in the Groveland area of Tuolumne County will close the roadway for four hours one day this week. Tuolumne County Public Works reports that crews will be conducting general maintenance all day on Thursday, April 18th. The work will include brushing, slide cleanups, and culvert cleanouts along the entire roadway. The hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Sonora Pass Closure Gate Moving Higher Up
Sonora, CA — Caltrans reports that progress is being made plowing snow off Highway 108 Sonora Pass. Pass-clearing operations commenced last week and crews have been working 10 hours per day, seven days a week. The Long Barn maintenance crew has been busy removing downed trees and other debris.
PG&E Will Be Inspecting Equipment by Helicopter
Sonora, CA — Pacific Gas & Electric will have helicopters flying low in the region on Friday, April 19, inspecting electric towers and poles. PG&E spokesperson Jeff Smith reports, “You can expect to see and hear helicopters flying close to the power lines. They may hover in the same location for brief periods of time. While patrols are underway, you may also see PG&E and/or contractor trucks in the area.”

Video Of Officer Involved Shooting In Groveland Released
Groveland, CA — Tuolumne County Sheriff officials have released the body-cam video from the deputy-involved shooting that happened in Groveland. The suspect, 42-year-old Shawn Karr of Coulterville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy involved in the shooting was identified only by his last name, Zanini, in the video. As earlier reported here, on Tuesday, February 27, a white pickup truck was pulled over for several vehicle violations while patrolling along Merrell Road near Harper Road. The driver was found to have a vile with white powder residue on him, suspected of being methamphetamine. Karr was the passenger, and the video shows that after arguing with Deputy Zanini, Karr ran but was tackled to the ground.
